School Closure: Please click here for Year 2 Maths, English and Reading Home Learning

The Year 2 Home Learning page

We hope that you are safe and well. We miss you all and we are looking forward to the time that we can all come back together again at school.

During school closure, it would be brilliant if children could:

  • Read for 20-30 minutes (independent reading, reading to an adult or sibling, listening to an adult read).
  • Complete a Maths activity (please see the new guidance below).
  • Complete an English activity.
  • Complete a Reading Comprehension activity.

You'll find all of the activities below. We hope that children have been enjoying recording their work in a variety of different ways and we really look forward to celebrating their work with them when we all return to school. Please remember that you can choose activities from the year group above for a greater challenge or from the year group below if you feel the work is a little tricky.

Numbots, Purple Mash, Spelling Shed and Phonics Play logins and passwords should still be live and working and Mr Helm has also suggested that families could investigate the BBC Bitesize webpage and iplayer/red button content (https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize).

Please do not hesitate to contact the Year Two team if you have any questions, would like to share pictures of your work with us or even just to say hello. You can contact us at AskYear2@longfleet.poole.sch.uk and we'll get back to you as quickly as we can.

English Summer Term (2) Learning

We will be making some changes in the home learning resources and activities being provided in English during the second half of the Summer term.

Up until now, the children will have been completing a daily reading comprehension AND spelling/punctuation/grammar worksheet. This provision will continue.

An OPTIONAL alternative will also be provided. This will involve a sequence of lessons, lasting 2-3 weeks, based on one unit of work which has a greater focus on writing skills (whilst also including some reading and grammar work). It is akin to the style of lessons and activities taught in class each day in school and throughout year groups (Talk for Writing). These lessons WILL be followed by the children working in school. A video will launch and conclude each unit of work. Please note: it will probably be very tricky to dip in and out of the Talk For Writing units of work.

Remote learners therefore have the option of either: continuing with the reading comprehension and grammar work; OR, following the new Talk for Writing units of work. There is no expectation to do both but of course, you are welcome to!

For those children who do access the Talk for Writing work at home, your teachers would love to see your work. Take a photo of yourself doing an activity or a photo of some completed work and email it to the AskYear2@longfleet.poole.sch.uk. Your teachers will provide feedback once a week.

SPELLINGS for EVERYONE – home and at school (Year 2 and above). Each week, 10 spellings will be set either in class or on the home learning page of the website. These will need to be learnt and a virtual spelling test will then be held via an on-line video led by a teacher (day of the week to be confirmed).

PLEASE REMEMBER YOU MAY WISH TO CHOOSE THE YEAR GROUP ABOVE FOR A GREATER CHALLENGE OR YEAR GROUP BELOW IF YOU FEEL THE WORK IS TOO DIFFICULT. THIS APPLIES TO ALL THE ACTIVITIES.

Maths Summer Term Learning

These Maths resources will enable children to be as well prepared as possible for when they return to school. Each day, there is a tutorial video, a worksheet and the answers. To access the work, please follow the link below, select and watch the appropriate video for the current week/appropriate day and then click on the 'Get the Activity' task.

Some tasks may require extra equipment (e.g. a ruler) and we appreciate that children may not have access to all of these resources at home. Please do not worry. We'll be proud of the children for completing the sections that they're able to access and perhaps they can make sensible guesses to estimate the other answers.

White Rose Friday Family Maths Challenge

The most suitable challenges for Year 2 are challenges 1, 2 and 3. However, you and your family could challenge yourselves and try and complete all of the challenges. How far can you get? Good luck and enjoy!

White Rose Friday Family Challenge Certificate

Download your White Rose Friday Family Challenge Certificate and record how many challenges you have completed.
These booklets could be useful if you are finding the White Rose Maths work requires too much parental support and you need your child to work independently on their Maths. Please note that these booklets are a 'back up' option for you and not an extra task to complete or a replacement for the White Rose work. White Rose remains our first choice for Maths activities for your child.
