External Music Ensembles

Young Musicians and their families are so spoilt living in BCP! There is a huge range of musical ensembles for young people on our doorstep - quite literally something for everyone! Please see below for more information about SoundStorm's Creative Ensemble, Poole Society for Young Musicians, the Bournemouth Marching Band, YMW Junior Wind Band, Wessex New Strings, Wessex Recorders and the BCP Youth Guitar Group.

SoundStorm's Creative Ensemble When? The sessions will take place on Saturdays: 11th October, 8th November, 10th January, 14th February, 14th March and 9th May from 10:30am-3pm (for members and non-members) and on 13th June (rehearsal from 10:30am-3pm and concert to take place in the late afternoon, exact time tbc – for members only) Where? Magna Academy, Ashdown Close, Poole, Dorset, BH17 8RE What is it? The creative ensemble is led by musicians from the Bath Philharmonia Creative Learning Team, working with SoundStorm practitioners, and is open to all musicians on any instrument, including voice. All standards are welcome, from beginner to expert. It is highly subsidised thanks to Arts Council funding.

Poole Society For Young Musicians PSYM offer great opportunities such as Jurassic Brass Juniors with Kevin Penfold, Mini Maestros (orchestra) and a Music Summer School every year.

Bournemouth Marching Band BYMB is a traditional style youth band from Dorset. We are a registered charity. We are one of the largest and most successful youth marching bands in the South and South West. We perform in a classic military style in concerts, band tattoos, arena displays, carnivals, parades and ceremonials. This makes us unique in the area. We play a wide range of music including military marches, classical pieces, pop music and film scores. We have some of the finest young musicians in the area. Our rehearsals are on Wednesdays 6.30pm to 9pm at Kinson Community Centre, Pelhams Park and one Sunday afternoon per month at Poole Harbour. No instrument or previous musical or marching experience is necessary to join. Minimum age = 8 years old. They also offer music tuition.

Youth Music Wessex Junior Wind Band Wessex Junior Wind Band (WJWB) - Saturdays - 9.30am - 10.30am at Lytchett Minster School. Playing level: Grades 1-4* - no audition requirement The WJWB caters for our newest wind, brass and percussion players; giving them an all-round introduction to the wind band world. The repertoire is carefully chosen to suit the introductory level, challenging just enough to ensure progress. The hour-long rehearsal enables these new young musicians to begin to build stamina and improve concentration and offers insights into rhythm work, breath control and listening skills as well. But most importantly, it offers youngsters from all over the area the opportunity to try out their new instrumental skills alongside others who are also starting out on their music-making journey, so making new friends becomes a happy extra! .

Wessex New Strings Wessex New Strings - Saturdays - 9am - 10.15am at Lytchett Minster School. Playing level: Grades 0 - 3 - no audition requirement As the name suggests, this ensemble welcomes the newest string players, giving these young musicians their first taste of orchestral playing. The New Strings rehearsals enable youngsters to begin to make use of the skills they are learning in their instrumental lessons. The focus is on playing together, listening to each other, maintaining good posture and keeping going! It brings a vital extra purpose to their instrumental lessons and practice at home, enables these newest young musicians to meet and make new friends with the same interests.

Wessex Recorder Classes & Ensemble Descant Recorder classes - beginners and beyond - Saturdays 9am - 9.30am at Lytchett Minster School. Wessex Recorder Ensemble 11am - 11.30am - beginner class

BCP Youth Guitar Group A fantastic opportunity to enjoy playing together and develop your guitar playing. Running on the first Saturday of every month at Absolute Music 10am -1:30pm during term time. Open to all abilities of guitarist from year 3 to year 10.
