Special Educational Needs and Disability Information

At Longfleet Primary School we recognise that every child has their own needs and abilities.

Our Inclusion Team which includes Pastoral Worker, Family Worker, SENCo and SEND Support work together with children, families, staff and outside agencies to provide a supportive environment where every child is valued and develops holistically to reach their full potential.

Children who are identified as requiring additional support may only need a short-term intervention to help boast confidence and support learning, but others may have a need or disability which affects their ability to learn in the longer term.  In these cases, following consultation with parents/carers, they may be put on our Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) register and additional support will be put in place the enables them to make progress.

There are 4 areas of need according to the 2014 Code of Practice.

  • Cognition and Learning
  • Social, Mental and Emotional health
  • Communication and Interaction
  • Sensory and/or Physical Needs

Observation and assessment by class teachers

If our teachers feel your child may not be making their age expected progress and consider this may be the consequence of a special educational need, they will discuss their concerns with you and with our Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo). Our SEND Support may then carry out observations, implement more specific assessments and gather further evidence from school and home. This information will be used to help put in place the support required to best meet your child’s learning needs.

Once a child is on the SEND register

Pupil discussed holistically at Inclusion Team so that all needs are met.

  • Notification goes to parents/carers
  • Pupils ‘voice’  is written, which is central to any planning
  • Teacher prepares an Individual Education Plan
  • Individual folder is prepared for intervention
  • Extra parents evening.

Input from a specialist outside professional

At times with your consent, we may ask for help to assess and support your child from outside agencies to include, Clare O’Conner Specialised Teacher, Education Psychologist, Speech and Language Therapists, School Nurse or Outreach from specialised schools. This will never happen without your consent and you will be kept fully informed of their findings and recommendations.
