On Thursday and Friday, Year 5 went to Scaplen’s Court to learn what working in a workhouse was like for children in the Victorian era. We went into the kitchen led by Ms Jelly. She was very strict and had no mercy for weak children. We were taught how to make pancakes, bread, scones, soup and also learnt how to clean and shine. In the classroom, we wrote on slate with chalk and if we were naughty/got the answer wrong, you would wear a dunce’s cap. The Victorians were very strict and everything had to be perfect.
