Year 3 and 4 had an excellent morning at Magna Academy, competing against 8 other schools and 12 other teams in total. All of the children had learnt golf at Longfleet by the host of the event, Coach Deej, who put the children through their paces with the help of the excellent Magna Academy Leaders. In a rotation of activities, our 20 children enjoyed chipping and putting games, and were kept active throughout the morning. We couldn't quite finish in the top 3 to qualify for the Dorset Finals, but improved hugely as the morning progressed. Thank you to the parents for coming to support and helping with transport. 

Our school orchestra recently gained twenty-two new recorder players from Years 3 & 4 and three new violin players from Crocodile Class, taking our numbers up to sixty-five!  To celebrate, we learnt a piece of music called ‘Superhero Blues’ and performed it to the parents after school on Wednesday.

Children representing each of our instruments also performed a piece of music. The recorders kicked off the concert with ‘Chilled’, followed by performances from the flutes and clarinets. Our cello pupils performed Frere Jacques in three parts and a Grade 2 piece called ‘Happy Places’. Jiya then gave us a lovely solo violin performance of a piece from ‘Carmen’. Our trombones, cornets and trumpets gave a lively rendition of ‘Strollin’ followed by impressive solos by Zoya on the piano and Josh on the drumkit. The concert ended with ‘Superhero Blues’ performed by the whole orchestra.

Well done to the orchestra (especially if that was your first ever performance) and thank you to all the parents, families, friends and teachers who came to listen.

The children in Year One had a fantastic day out at Avon Heath Country Park celebrating all that they had learnt in their 'Roots, Shoots and Muddy Boots' topic. They expertly identified different items from nature in a scavenger hunt and made some wonderfully creative pieces of artwork using objects found around the forest trail. The highlight of the day, however, had to be the den building where they worked as teams to create Bear Grylls-worthy dens. They dragged and arranged branches, furnished their dwellings with logs and even passed the waterproofing inspection! A superb day was had by all!

Longfleet started the tournament confidently with some tight bowling and fielding against St Joseph’s. However, two silly run outs and a remarkable last over in which we lost 3 wickets, all to great catches, ensured we narrowly lost our first game. Although our skills improved, so did our opponents, and Baden Powell A and Bishop Aldhelm’s were the two strongest teams in the competition. Our fielding certainly improved in these games as we had plenty of practise! A final battle saw us matched against St Joseph’s again, where in a shortened match, we batted, bowled and fielded brilliantly to win by 30 runs. Mason in particular caught three brilliant catches, whilst Lewis bowled his over quickly and accurately. Well done to all the players for their fantastic improvements over the course of the tournament, especially in the bowling.

Our Year 5 Lionesses produced some great displays to finish the tournament in 3rd place. The tournament was played on the Vitality Stadium pitch, and the girls were so excited to play on the same pitch as some of their heroes. In a small group of 3, each school played each other twice, resulting in four group matches overall.

This put us into a semi-final with St James. A narrow 1-0 loss was an unlucky result with the chances Longfleet missed, but the girls had a fantastic time.

 

Daisy Preston scored 12 goals overall in the tournament, making her the tournament’s top scorer. 

 

 

               Year 5’s Trip to Winchester Science Centre

Year 5 went on a trip to Winchester Science Centre for their topic of EUREKA! First, we got on to the coaches and set off for a one-hour journey. When we got there, we split up into our groups and ventured to the ground or top floor.

Here are some explanations of the exhibits:

Mind Ball: The mind ball is an exhibit where you must relax to get the ball to your opponent’s end of the table.

The Vortex: The Vortex is an exhibit where you must turn around the handle to make a vortex.

The Colon Café: First, you had to get a ticket from a ticket machine and go in. Next, you scan your ticket. After that, you watch your digested food flow around your intestines. On your way out, it says: “WARNING, WARNING toxic gas is coming!

THE WORKSHOP

In our workshop, we learnt about the states of matter: liquids, gases and solids.

First, we had to show what the states of matter were. Then we had to do some experimenting. Let’s see if you can guess what we made. So it is sticky, kids love it and it is stretchy. So have you guessed yet?.........You have? Good! It’s slime of course. Then we had to gather all our slime into one ginormous piece of it.                                                     

The Planetarium

Last of all, we went in to the planetarium. A planetarium is a big dome that has a projector showing the night sky.  In addition, a remote controls the projector and makes the sky move.

Longfleet took twenty children to a festival held at Canford school and luckily the sun shone and a fantastic morning was had by all the children. They learnt batting, bowling and fielding skills with Chance to Shine coaches, who kept the children energised throughout the morning. The children’s favourite activity was the “pull shot” drill, where they got to hit the ball off a high tee as far as they could and away from the fielders. 

The Harbourside Learning Partnership have produced many events for our infant aged children recently, and this week 20 children each from Lilliput, Courthill and Longfleet participated in the inaugural HLP Multiskills event, held at Courthill Infant School. Eight of the Longfleet Sports Ambassadors helped with the event and ran an activity each, with the parents and other teachers impressed with their commitment and enthusiasm. Skills including balancing, shooting, teamwork and aiming were improved on throughout the event, and the children won a participation medal for their efforts.

Bournemouth RFC hosted another Dorset Tag Rugby Festival, this time for Years 3 and 4. Longfleet took two teams, and were one of 15 schools to take part in the tournament, which included over 20 teams overall. Although the matches were deemed "non-competitive", the TREDS values of rugby were in full force as Longfleet scored some brilliant tries, and, after some excellent coaching by the Bournemouth RFC referees, also learned the importance of a defensive line and coming up together. Incredible solo individual tries were scored by George S, Reuben C and Denny, whilst Jed must have been the festival's top try scorer with 12 tries in only 6 matches. The children even came away with a BRFC goodie bag and a medal for their efforts.  

This term the children in Year 4 are having whole class tuition on brass instruments. In their first lesson today, they met Mr Penfold who is a specialist brass teacher that already visits Longfleet to to teach our Year 6 brass pupils. Mr Penfold demonstrated each of the brass instruments to help the children decide whether to play a trumpet, cornet or trombone. Very quickly the children learnt to play their first two notes and each class has the makings of a great brass band already!

After the next lesson all the children will be able to take home an instrument to practice on. This instrument will be theirs for the duration of the project.

Later this week, the Year 4 parents will be recieving a letter telling them a bit more about the lessons and explaining how to look after the instruments.
